So, You Want To Make A Million Dollars?

If you are like me, you hear it all the time – and see it on online forums and social media; PEOPLE WANT TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS. Since most of us never get to hold $1,000,000 in our hands and count our way through it, then it seems like a really good goal, right?

What we really want is to get rid of the financial burdens that we have to deal with, and have enough money to turn our dreams into a reality. And if we just had a million dropped on us at once, that would pretty well do it.

How long would it last you? If you just kept on a budget and didn’t spend over $1000/ day then you could stretch it out to 1000 days! BUT, that’s only 3 years, and then what would you do? I don’t know if you have thought this through, but most of us who are working class people will make $1,000,000 in our working lifetime – or more.

Small business owners around your town, like construction businesses or service type businesses clear $1,000,000 every 4-10 years. Bigger businesses right in your own town make several million every year. There are investors near you who sit quietly in their home and pocket millions and you wouldn’t even know it by meeting them on the street.

So getting a million dollars on it’s own isn’t going to solve all your problems. But getting a good amount coming in to you on a regular basis will most certainly propel you into the elite group in your neighborhood. 

Do You Have A Plan?

If you simply want to make a million dollars your plan could be as simple as winning the lottery, a few good nights at the casino, or an heir dies and leaves you a fortune.

You could rob convenience stores, become a lot lizard or do hits for the mafia. You could deal illegal drugs or become a politician and work for special interest groups. 

My point is, there are lots of ways to make a million dollars, but they all have unfavorable consequences, or they rely on circumstances that you have no control over.

Only a small fraction of those who work a job will ever have the kind of lifestyle that will give that kind of freedom, so when you boil it down to what is left the only way to get that kind of income and lifestyle AND still respect yourself is to….

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS

People go into business for a lot of reasons. Maybe they are a good cook so they decide to open a restaurant. They might work for someone else and think they would be better off doing the same work for themselves, you know – be their own boss.

Unfortunately, most of those are all the wrong reasons and that’s why so many new businesses only last a short time. Many a small business owner makes less and works more hours than they did working for someone else.

But that’s not you, right? Your very reason for starting a business of your own is to make a million dollars. And you would probably like to do it again and over again. So the key to building a business that doesn’t end in disaster like most businesses do, is to start out with the right mindset from the beginning.

I love running my own business. I had a restaurant in my 20’s, rentals in my 30’s, a recycling business in my 40’s and a trucking company in my 50’s. They all made money, but not nearly what they could have if I had known one important concept.

If you are really setting out to have a business that will crank out million dollar paychecks then I suggest you start out right. If I had known about what Micheal Gerber teaches I could have made any one of my previous businesses an absolute gold mine.

Not All Businesses Can Make $1,000,000

If you understand what Micheal Gerber teaches in the video above then you will see that not every idea you may have for a business is a good one. If you want your income to be unlimited and have the time to enjoy it, then don’t start a business that will tie you down or create a job for you.

If you feel like you have a good business idea then ask yourself if it’s the kind of business that you can step away from once it’s up and going and it will keep running without you. If you think you’ll have to stay to make sure things keep going, then it’s not the right choice for you – it’s more like another job that you can’t just up and quit.

If you don’t feel like you want to manage a whole army of employees, then don’t get yourself into a business like that. If you don’t want to put up a slug of capital or borrow a bunch of money, then don’t go after that kind of business.

You may be like many others that want to make their first million dollar paycheck – you may not have a lot to invest in the startup. Do not think, however that you can start a business that will make you a mint without any investment on your part.

The reason I caution you here is because you run into that a lot online. “Turnkey businesses” mean that you will pay someone for something that worked for them a few years ago but is now out of date. They will take your money.

Network marketing and direct sales businesses will not get you there either. It used to be one option that people could try before the Internet came along. I’m not knocking these types of businesses if you like to represent a good product that you like. But I am saying, don’t count on them to be your million dollar gold mine.

Sell Before You Buy

This is one of the most powerful concepts in business, and sales is the highest paying profession in the world. Just think of the opportunities you could have if you could sell a product and get paid – all before you buy the product and ship it.

That’s the kind of opportunity that you have now with online sales. With nothing more than a blog and a Shopify store you can roll out a product to the world and get paid immediately. I’m not kidding, the money goes into your Paypal account within a few minutes of a customer purchase and then you simply fulfill the order.

In the last few years many people have made good businesses like this with “dropshipping”. They simply find a supplier that will ship products, mostly from China, and when they make a sale they just pay for it and have it shipped right to the customer. This model, although popular lately does have it’s drawbacks – not the least of which is the wait time for the customer – up to 6 weeks.

The future is much brighter for those who can sell a product that they produce or have on hand. I prefer books which I either fulfill myself or have shipped from Amazon. A good bet for the future is using the dropship model, but let American local vendors fulfill the orders for you.

Just Do What Works

This concept isn’t new but every time someone makes it work it causes people to OOOW and AAAAW. It’s simple really – you just keep your eye peeled for a system out there that is already working good and figure out how to make it work for you.

I remember when I was a kid there was a manufacturer in our town who would literally steal ideas from other businesses. He got sued for it I heard, but I guess he made enough money with his products to offset the costs.

I would never personally do that kind of idea stealing, but I would take a look at what’s working for others and see if I could make it work for me, too. That’s gotten really easy to do in today’s online world because we are bombarded with ads on social media every day.

Here’s an example – I saw a good video ad on Facebook for laundry pods. The video was great so I clicked through to his sales page and the offer was great, too. Laundry pods that are “healthy”, shipped right to my door on autoship. It was a winner for me cause it saves me one more trip the the store for something I have to buy anyway.

Isn’t that crazy? Laundry Pods !! How many people are selling laundry pods and this guy makes a killer sales funnel right there on Facebook. The amount of everyday products that people will buy online is going up year by year. What an opportunity.

So the lesson is: Don’t just take any old idea and throw money at it – instead find something that works already and build a sales funnel just like it. That way you are just carving out your piece of a market that you know already exists.

Just Do It

Look, I’ll just shoot straight with you, OK? You can wait for your shot at the lottery or you can take charge of your life and start your own business. It’s up to you, but nothing short of taking action will get you any closer.

Don’t let yourself get stuck. There is absolutely nothing that you can’t learn just with a simple Internet search. Work your way through every thing that stops you and don’t take any prisoners.

I’ll share with you my best tip for being productive with the time you have for your online business. Here it is: Before you get online make a list on paper of the things you want to accomplish that day – and stick to it.

That way when you get online and start working, and then get distracted by a cat video, you can come back to ground zero and work your way right down your list. THAT’S IT !!
